Venezuelan artist Arturo Herrera’s solo exhibition MIRROR presented a site-specific installation conceived in dialogue with the distinctive architecture of the building designed by Rainer G. Rümmler in 1980.
Curated by B26 Arts & Cultural Projects at the new location of FELD+HAUS Projects, the exhibition explored the relationship between artistic disciplines, architecture, and place. Located on an island and surrounded by water, the exhibition space became an integral part of Herrera’s intervention. The constant movement of the water, the transparency of the building, and views of Berlin’s Westhafen informed works created specifically for the exhibition.
Handcrafted glass works and a large-scale, all-over wall painting were carefully integrated into the architecture, expanding the viewer’s perspective beyond the individual works to the relationship between art, space, and the surrounding environment.
Born in Caracas in 1959 and based in New York and Berlin, Herrera works across collage, works on paper, sculpture, relief, wall painting, photography, and felt. His practice combines and recontextualizes abstract and figurative elements, exploring fragmentation, memory, and the visual language of abstraction.
Herrera’s work has been presented internationally at institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Dia Center for the Arts, UCLA Hammer Museum, and Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, among others. He participated in the 2002 Whitney Biennial and was awarded a fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
